ATLANTA – For the first week of the Georgia high school football season, it’s the Attack of the Acronyms as the B.E.S.T. Academy Eagles tangle with the KIPP Atlanta Collegiate Warriors from Lakewood Stadium.
And for B.E.S.T, it’s a chance to build on last year’s success. The Eagles won their very first playoff game before losing to Rabun County 35-2 in the second round. They went 6-6, tying the school record for most victories in a season (2013).
For Eagle head coach Joshua Moore, success just means the bar for this campaign has been raised higher. “Every year, the goal is to improve on the previous year,” he said. “This is a new and young group, so things will look a little different, but expectations remain the same.”
Whatever expectations the Eagles have, the defense will be counted upon to help realize them. Richard Benton, Jr. will see action on both the line and in the secondary. He has over 30 Division I offers, and he had 15 sacks last season. He’ll be assisted by Rashad Whitehead on the line and Giovanni Morgan in the backfield.
Offensively, B.E.S.T. will utilize Whitehead as their main receiving target. He’ll get multiple looks from the tight end slot. Gregory Robinson II, a transfer from Detroit, is another player that Moore is high on.
It’s been a steady climb to that first playoff victory, a 34-27 win over Temple Institute. Moore has been with the program since the creation, and he can clearly remember the early days. “I started this program from scratch with only a couple of football, some uniforms, and dummies was and still is the greatest challenge,” Moore said. “We just focus on one year at a time trying to build a program that can consistently be a playoff contender.”
Being a playoff contender is one thing, but the Eagles have the misfortune of sharing a region with the reigning AA champions, Hapeville Charter. But the Hornets lose some very significant pieces from that squad, and there may be an opening.
B.E.S.T. and KIPP share a region, six, so this will be an important contest as each tries to make an early statement in the playoff race.
The game with KIPP with be streamed on Sportalspaces’ YouTube channel. Subscription information is available at
